The Pattern

  1. Pick a comfortable middle-range note (concert Bb is a good default).
  2. Play the note for as long as your air supports — aim for 12 seconds, work toward 20.
  3. Focus on:
    • Steady tone — no wavering at the start or end.
    • Even volume — same dynamic from first second to last.
    • Centered pitch — use a tuner, but check it after, not during.
  4. Rest the same length you played.
  5. Move chromatically up, then down, an octave each direction.

Why This Works

Long tones teach your body what sustained, even sound feels like — which is the foundation everything else gets built on.
